V2115: A Cappella 101 in Splash! Spring 2012 (Apr. 21 - 22, 2012)
Have you always wanted to sing awesome harmonies like the people on The Sing Off and Glee? Here's your chance! Everyday People, Stanford University's only Hip-hop, Motown, R&B, and Soul A Capella group is teaching a class on the basics of performance a capella. We will run the class in the style of a rehearsal. This process will include warming up, song teaching, and putting each part together to form some great music! The foundation of our rehearsal is the warm up--exercising our vocal chords and expanding our range is a necessary part of building our vocal control. We will teach some basic scales that serve to expand our range, exercises in volume control, and some fun warm ups to prepare us to sing with emotion. We dedicate the next part of our rehearsal to learning songs. Each song arrangement has four parts: soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. Each section has a vital role in forming the rich background accompaniment to each song. The Everyday People arrangement of "You're All I Need to Get By" is a perfect example of the focus that goes into each background part of the song. We will break each individual section down, and then build each part back up. It is always a fun experience to listen to the contrast between each isolated section and the blended final product of everyone singing together. After warming up with us and hearing us perform a song, you will now be equipped with the skills to learn a song! We will be teaching one of our most fun songs: a fusion of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean", and Blackstreet's "No Diggity". We love this song because it has a great beat, ALWAYS helps us get into singing!
