Brief Biographical Sketch:
Hey what's up hello my name is Caroline and I'm currently a Stanford freshman majoring in Earth Systems. I've loved nature since I was very little despite being from Los Angeles, California, one of the least natural places out there, but it wasn't until my junior year of high school that I fell in love with environmental science. Thanks to a research opportunity I was incredibly lucky to get, I found that I had a passion for soil science and it's become fundamental to who I am to the point where I label all my belongings with "I heart soils" stickers. At the same time in my life, I started working in a public science museum and realized I also had a passion for teaching science in new and exciting ways. Chances are, soil is not something that's frequently at the top of your mind, but if you drink water, eat food, breathe air, or live in a building, you rely on it for your daily life. Soils may seem fairly simple, but they actually contain their own ecosystems of microscopic life, serve a vast array of roles, and come in countless different forms. In this class, you'll learn what soil really is, some of the why you should care about it, and how to tell different types of soil apart. Be prepared to get dirty!
