Brief Biographical Sketch:
Dawson has been working with data since his sophomore year of high school, at first analytically, and then as a tool for social exploration and artistic expression. While spending a year in Atlanta before college, he taught science and computer programming at the Global Village Project, a school for refugee girls. At Stanford, he's taken courses on the aesthetics of data in music and fine art. He's also done research at the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics, where he used satellite images and sound to explore armed conflict around the world. What does it mean to live in the data economy? How have government surveillance programs shaped the digital landscape? We'll be exploring these topics through art and data visualization. We'll cover the work of Trevor Paglen, Heather Dewey-Hagborg, and other artists working at the intersection of data and society. At the end of the course, we'll discuss the tools and techniques that you can use to make your own data art.
