S1889: What do scientists do? in Splash! Fall 2011 (Oct. 29 - 30, 2011)
Not everyone wearing a lab coat is a scientist, and (importantly!) not all scientists wear lab coats. We all know some people are scientists, but do we know what makes them scientists, and what they do as such? This class will address those questions. We'll look at a little bit of history and philosophy of science and lots of examples to work out (hopefully) satisfying answers. Students will get a chance to appreciate the beauty and power of scientific reasoning, and the broad range of its applications. We'll see if we can come up with some scientific questions of our own, and maybe even ways to go about answering them.
