Brief Biographical Sketch:
Rachel is a freshman who hails from San Antonio, Texas, and is trying to figure out if it’s possible to do about a dozen majors, including Art History, Human Biology, and English. Tutoring through the Haas Center’s education partnerships has been a highlight of her Stanford experience so far, and she’s also enjoyed taking part in SIG. A former ballerina, Rachel is active in Stanford’s social dance community and can often be found at Roble. She spends her free time reading poetry and hanging out with her amazing classmates. Rachel’s long-term goals include keeping track of her student ID and creating a more just and sustainable world. Have you ever stared at a painting by Jackson Pollock and wondered, "What does this all mean?" We're here to help you find out! Using the works in the Anderson Collection, we will introduce you to some of the most significant artists of the Abstract Expressionist movement. If you've never taken an art history class before, this is a great place to start! The works we will examine are more than splatters of paint on canvas - they are rooted in the times in which they were created, but speak to what is eternal in the human experience.
