This class will give an introduction to the culture of cuteness (kawaii) in Japan. We will talk about the origin and history of Japanese kawaii culture.
S3230: Cuteness in Japanese Popular Culture in Splash! Fall 2013 (Nov. 02 - 03, 2013)
How is Japanese popular culture such as J-pop, idols, manga, characters, and street fashion linked to the cuteness (kawaii) of Japan? Why is kawaii so highly valued in Japanese popular culture? The origin and history of Japanese cuteness will be discussed.
S2868: Japan's Aging Society in Splash! Spring 2013 (Apr. 13 - 14, 2013)
Japan is experiencing population aging. Today, nearly a quarter of the total population of Japan is 65 year old and older. This class will explore Japan's aging society and the long life of Japanese people. We will have an open discussion about the topic.
S2869: Culture of Cuteness in Japan and the United States in Splash! Spring 2013 (Apr. 13 - 14, 2013)
This class will focus on a comparison of the American and Japanese cultures with an emphasis of Kawaii/cuteness culture. Both instructors have spent time in Japan and shared the unique culture of Japan.
