S1986: Girls Run the World(?) Engaging Students in Feminist and Social Justice Activism in Splash! Spring 2012 (Apr. 21 - 22, 2012)
The class will look at the issues that women, teenage girls, and even young girls face today. It will also examine the history of the feminist/women's movement and its connection to other social justice issues. Students will learn how both girls/women have worked to achieve equality and the work still to be done. Issues to be discussed include: female and gender stereotypes, issues of beauty, how women/girls are portrayed in the media, and how factors like race, class, and nationality have influenced both women's lives and social justice movements. Students will be awakened not only to injustices regarding gender, but also race, and class, nationality, and socio-economic status in national and global contexts.
