Einstein formulated the theory of special relativity(SR) around 1905. The theory captures the relationship between space and time. SR itself produces many well-known interesting results (eg. The Twin Paradox, The snake and the axe). However, it fails to explain some paradoxes involving gravity. Later between 1907 and 1915, Einstein proposed the theory of General Relativity(GR) in an attempt to connect space-time, the main subject of SR, with gravity. The course will explore some interesting results from SR and provide a motivation for GR. Most importantly, it will provide you with a perfect reason to stay a couch potato.
M4494: Linear Fractional Transformations in Splash Fall 2015 (Nov. 07 - 08, 2015)
Complex numbers have a lot of nice properties that are hard to find in real numbers. For example, a lot of operations in complex numbers can be interpreted in a geometric way. In this class, we examine the function $f(z)=\frac{az+b}{cz+d}$, which is called a linear fractional transformation. It is a very important function in maths. By showing you what this function does geometrically, I hope you would be able to appreciate the beauty of complex numbers.
M3508: Two Cute Math Problems in Splash! Spring 2014 (Apr. 12 - 13, 2014)
I'll introduce two of my favorite math problems
1. Prove there are only five different Platonic Solid: tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, dohecahedron, and OlIcosahedron.
2. Monty Hall Problem (three door problem) Does probability cheat? Or does intuition cheat?
